Taking magnesium with food improves absorption and reduces stomach upset. Split your dose across the day rather than taking it all at once; your body absorbs smaller doses more efficiently.
Timing matters. Magnesium glycinate taken at night supports sleep. Magnesium L-threonate is usually taken in the morning and early afternoon because of its mild cognitive effect — taking it too late can interfere with sleep for some people. Citrate and oxide, if used for constipation, work faster on an empty stomach but expect GI activity within hours.
The upper tolerable intake for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg per day for adults. This applies to supplements only, not food — dietary magnesium does not cause toxicity in healthy kidneys.
